Overview
The URIBL blocklist lists domains appearing in spam and is used with anti-spam software such as SpamAssassin. It does not list domains from where a message was sent. It has five publicly available lists representing different levels of severity and two private lists for their data feed customers.
- Listings occur at the domain level.
- IP addresses connected to the destination domain may also be listed.
- The impact on deliverability is low.
Reasons for getting listed
Your domain may be listed if you:
- Include a domain in your content that is also used in spam.
- Use a new domain in your content and have poor sending practices.
- Hide your identity using a Whois privacy service.
- Do not follow sending best practices causing your email to be perceived as spam.
How to get off this blocklist
This blocklist accepts manual requests to remove domains. Register for an account with URIBL and use the URI lookup feature to confirm your domain is listed. If your domain is listed, use the same form for delisting requests.
Tips for staying off this blocklist
- If using a third-party image hosting service, pre-check domains prior to their use to ensure they are not listed.
- Make sure your servers are properly configured and have no open relays or open proxies.
- Conduct ongoing security checks to prevent unknown third-parties from sending spam.
- Avoid using URL shorteners such as bit.ly as they are often used by spammers to hide the destination domain.
- Do not hide your identity on Whois using a privacy service.
- Proactively check the status for domains used in your content, especially new domains, even if the domain is from a trusted source.
- Use sending best practices to ensure your marketing email is not perceived as spam.
